43. Why indices rather than characters, signs, distinctive markings? Because the body escapes, is never sure, lets its presence be suspected but not identified. It could always just be part of another, bigger body that we take to be its house, its car or its horse, its ass or its mattress. It could be nothing more than the double of that tiny, vaporous other body that we call its soul and that escapes through its mouth when it dies. All we have at our disposal are indications, traces, imprints, and vestiges.

43. Pourquoi des indices plutôt que des caractères, des signes, des marques distinctives? Parce que le corps échappe, n’est jamais assuré, se laisse soupçonner mais non identifier. Il pourrait toujours n’être que partie d’un autre corps plus grand, que l’on prend pour sa maison, sa voiture ou son cheval, son âne, son matelas. Il pourrait n’être qu’un double de cet autre corps tout petit et vaporeux qu’on appelle son âme et qui sort de sa bouche lorsqu’il meurt. On dispose seulement d’indications, de traces, d’empreintes, de vestiges.

43. Perché degli indizi piuttosto che dei caratteri, dei segni, dei marchi distintivi? Perché il capo scappa, non è mai sicuro, si lascia supporre ma non identificare. Potrebbe sempre esser solo una parte di un altro corpo più grande, che si prende come casa, auto, cavallo, asino, materasso. Potrebbe essere solo il doppio di quell’altro corpo piccolissimo e vaporoso che si chiama anima e che esce dalla sua bocca quando muore. Disponiamo solo di indicazioni, di tracce, impronte, vestigia.
