9. Le corps est visible, l’âme ne l’est pas. On voit bien qu’un paralytique ne peut pas bouger sa jambe du bon côté. On ne voit pas qu’un méchant homme ne peut pas bouger son âme du bon côté : mais on doit penser que c’est l’effet d’une paralysie de l’âme. Et qu’il faut lutter contre elle et la faire obéir. Voilà le fondement de l’éthique, mon cher Nicomaque.

9. A body’s visible, the soul is not. We can easily see that a paralytic cannot move his good leg. We cannot see that a bad man cannot move his good soul: but we should take it as the effect of a paralysis of the soul. And we have to struggle against it and subdue it. 9. Il corpo è visibile, l’anima non lo è. Si vede bene che un paralitico non può muovere la gamba per il verso giusto. Non si vede che un uomo cattivo non può muovere l’anima per il verso giusto: ma si deve pensare che ciò sia effetto di una paralisi dell’anima. E che occorra lottare contro di essa e farla obbedire. Ecco il fondamento dell’etica, mio caro Nicomaco.
