From 58 INDICES SUR LE CORPS et EXTENSION DE L’ÂME. Éditions Nota bene, Québec, 2004.

6.The soul is the form of an organized body, says Aristotle. But the body, precisely, is what draws this form. It’s the form of the form, the form of the soul.

From Fifty-eight Indices on the Body (Corpus)Jean-Luc Nancy. New York, Fordham University Press, 2008.

From 58 INDICES SUR LE CORPS et EXTENSION DE L’ÂME. Éditions Nota bene, Québec, 2004.

44. Soul, body, mind: the first is the form of the second, and the third is the force producing the first. The second is thus the expressive form of the third. The body expresses the mind, meaning that it makes it spurt out outside, squeezes its essence, draws its sweat, extracts its sparkle and tosses it all into space. A body’s an explosion.

From Fifty-eight Indices on the Body (Corpus)Jean-Luc Nancy. New York, Fordham University Press, 2008.

From 58 INDICES SUR LE CORPS et EXTENSION DE L’ÂME. Éditions Nota bene, Québec, 2004.

_______________

59. Arises therefore the fifty-ninth index, the supernumerary, the excessive- the sexual: bodies are sexed. No body is unisex, as certain clothes are nowadays said to be. A body, on the contrary, is also a sex through and through: also breasts, a penis, vulva, testicles, ovaries; bony, morphological, physiological features, a type of chromosome. The body is sexed in essence. This essence is determined as the essence of a relation to the other essence. The body is thus determined in essence as a relation, or as in relation. The body is related to the body of the other sex. In this relation, its corporeality is involved insofar as it touches through sex on its limit: it delights [jouit], meaning that the body is shaken outside itself. Each of its zones, delighting for itself, emits the same light to the outside. This is called a soul. But mostly it stays caught in the spasm, the sob, or the sigh. Finite and infinite have intersected there, have crossed paths and exchanged places for an instant. Each of the sexes can occupy the position of the finite or the infinite.

From Fifty-eight Indices on the Body (Corpus)Jean-Luc Nancy. New York, Fordham University Press, 2008.

_______________

The philosopher’s voice: Index n.45

“Hearing is a physiological phenomenon; listening is a psychological act.” R. Barthes

After a year of deep interchange with the internationally famous philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy, AMAE and Pier Giorgio De Pinto took their performative project “58 (+1) indices on the body” one step further and are now pleased to share with the audience the astonishing result.

Commencing today, a paragraph from the book 58 indices on the body, which was recorded by the philosopher himself especially for the project will be released every week on Soundcloud.

Each track is recorded in the philosopher’s voice and in their original language of French. Some of them will offer unexpected twists, backstage sounds and unpredicted mistakes, each of which prodded the philosopher to re-think and add new indices to his work.

According to Barthes, alerting, deciphering and understanding are the three levels of listening that can be determined.

With this project we want to give to the audience a voice to listen to that is open to interpretation, but it is also true that we want to share something that can also just be heard as a basic sound – or a noise.

The launch track is the recording of the Index n. 45, where Jean-Luc Nancy discovers a typing error in the french publication.

From 58 INDICES SUR LE CORPS et EXTENSION DE L’ÂME
Éditions Nota bene, Québec, 2004.

______________

45. The body is ours and proper to us precisely to the degree that it doesn’t belong to us and evades the intimacy of our proper being, if this being ever even exists, something the body, precisely, should make us seriously doubt. But to this degree, which suffers no limitation, our body isn’t just ours but us, ourselves, even unto death, meaning its death and decomposition, in which we can be, and are, identically decomposed.

PRODDING JEAN-LUC NANCY

Another extraordinary, unexpected achievement has left us speechless: After our meeting with the philosopher in Freiburg last year, Mr. Nancy accepted our invitation to add a new piece of writing to the existing “58 indices on the body”.

The new indices, n. 60 and n. 61, the text of which will be revealed later in 2014, re-define the pre-existing work by including a “queer” perspective related to sex and gender (there were missing topics in the indices from 1 to 59).

The new paragraphs have been already recorded exclusively for our project; the picture above shows a screenshot of the wave form of the index n. 60.

Prodding a great mind produces great results. Follow our blog and stay tuned. Big news coming soon.

THE PHILOSOPHER’S VOICE

Image
2013 was definitely a prosperous year for Amae/De Pinto’s 58 (+1) Indices on the body. The philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy agreed to record himself reading the whole of the indices and offered to the artists an exclusive copyright.
The recording, a 45-minute session of slow reading, has been made in French which is Mr. Nancy’s native language and it will be used for further developments in 2014.
